The Mac GPG Icon Contest
The Mac GPG Project is hard at work churning out cool programs that make it simple and easy to preform common OpenPGP tasks. Only problem is, our icons suck. So, if you've been sitting around wondering what you could do to help the Mac GPG Project even though you have no programming skills (or even if you haven't been wondering that), here's your chance to get involved. See below for full contest information.
Rules
Okay, we're a bit particular, so be sure to read all the rules carefully. If you don't follow the all the rules your entry will be disqualified. Believe me, that sucks as much for us as it does for you.
- All entries must be submitted by no later than 11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time, Sunday, 30 June 2002.
- All entries must be the original artwork of the contestant(s) except when other material is used with permission and fits within the rules of this contest. For example, all images licensed under the GNU GPL are okay to use in your icons.
- Any one contestant may only submit one entry. One contestant, however, may participate in multiple teams. Likewise, any particular team may submit only one entry.
- Submissions must contain all of the following icons:
- Application icon for GPGKeys
- Application icon for GPGDropThing
- Application icon for GPGFileTool
- Preferences icon for GPGPreferences
- Exported key file icon
- Encrypted/Signed file icon
- Detached signature file icon
- Clearsigned file icon
- Encrypt toolbar icon
- Decrypt toolbar icon
- Sign toolbar icon
- Verify toolbar icon
- Sign and encrypt toolbar icon
- Decrypt and verify toolbar icon
- All entries must be submitted as both Mac OS X .icns and .tiff files. All icons must at least include a 128 by 128 pixel version and toolbar icons must also include a 32 by 32 pixel version.
- Contestants agree to have their entries posted on this Web page until up to 10 days after the contest ends. After such time all icons will come down and we will delete all entries except for the winner's.
- Contestants must agree that their icons will, upon winning, become copyright the Mac GPG Project. The Mac GPG Project will relicense them under the GNU GPL. The winner retains credit for his/their work and will of course still be able to use and distribute the icons under the terms of the GNU GPL (which is pretty much however you'd like), but we have to have the copyright to avoid legal complications down the road. The winner will be required to sign an affidavit that will be mailed or faxed to him/them upon winning.
- The winner may be requested, though not required, to provide future icons for the Mac GPG Project. If the winner does not wish to help us in the future with icons, we will at least request, though not require, that he send us his original artwork files (i.e. the file created with an image editor of choice that was later turned into an icon).
- Judging will be done by the administrator of the Mac GPG Project. If he so chooses, he may solicit opinions from developers and users, however it is still his decision. All judging decisions are final.
Hints
We're after professional looking icons that suggest to the user that Mac GPG applications are secure. We are not looking for excessively cool icons, but they should look good with Aqua. You are encouraged to use our logo (it's incensed under the GPL) or any of our existing icons if you find them useful.
Furthermore, if you're not sure what would be an appropriate icon for a particular item that we need, here are some suggestions. These are just suggestions for a few of the icons; we want you to be creative and come up with the best icons possible. These are just suggestions to help get you started.
- Application icon for GPGKeys - some keys on a keyring
- Exported key file icon - a key on a metallic file icon
- Encrypted/Signed file icon - metallic file icon with logo
- Detached signature file icon - bottom, broken off half of file with scribbles
- Encrypt toolbar icon - a lock
- Decrypt toolbar icon - a key
- Sign toolbar icon - a pen
- Verify toolbar icon - a certificate
Prizes
We currently have nothing to give the winner other than a pat on the back (if we ever get in close enough physical proximity) and lots of fame and glory for their hard work. Winning our contest is something that can go on a resume, in a portfolio, or can even be talked about in your advertising (i.e. "Want cool icons like the Mac GPG Project has? Talk to us!"). If you would like to donate a prize that we can give to the winner, contact Gordon. Supplying a prize, of course, means you get your name and logo displayed on this page with a link.
Submissions
If you think you have what it takes, e-mail us your icons and we'll post them below.
